Basketball at Atlanta's City Recreation Centers: What's Actually Published

October 20, 2026 · Pickup

We list 29 City of Atlanta recreation centers with indoor gyms, and almost none of them publish a basketball schedule. What the city publishes for them is building hours. There is one exception worth knowing about: Dunbar Recreation Center, at 477 Windsor Street SW, runs a free adult open-play session on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 2pm, for anyone 18 and over. It is listed in the city's activity catalogue as "Hoops at Dunbar — Free Play Basketball for Adults," at a cost of $0.

That is the whole answer for most people. The rest of this is why it was so hard to find, what else is actually in those gyms right now, and what every one of the 29 centers does tell you before you drive over.

Why you can't find this on the city's website

Search for open gym at an Atlanta rec center and you will land on the city's "Find a Recreation Center" page. It gives you an address and a set of hours — A.D. Williams, Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm; Central Park, Tuesday to Friday 11am to 8pm; Zaban, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Those are the hours the building is unlocked. They say nothing about whether the gym is free at 6pm on a Wednesday or whether a 10-and-under league has it until nine.

The programmes themselves are published somewhere else entirely: in the department's activity and registration catalogue, which is a separate system from the center pages. That is where "Hoops at Dunbar" lives. It is also where you find things like Basketball 101 at Peachtree Hills, a free 6pm to 7pm youth session that ran through July, and Circuit Training at Rosel Fann and Spin at C.T. Martin for this autumn. If you only ever read the center pages, you would conclude the city programmes nothing. It programmes plenty — it just doesn't cross-link the two.

We had drawn that wrong conclusion ourselves, in writing, on every one of these 29 court pages, until we went looking in the catalogue. Those pages have been corrected.

The six gyms with a league in them right now

The other thing in Atlanta's city gyms this autumn is Midnight Basketball, the department's adult league, now in its eleventh season. It is not drop-in — it is a 23-team league, 16 men's and 7 women's — but it tells you exactly when six of these gyms are occupied, and it is a real route into a city gym if you can put a team together.

Season XI tipped off on Tuesday 22 September 2026 and runs across six centers:

  • C.T. Martin Natatorium & Recreation Center, 3201 Martin Luther King Jr Dr SW
  • Adams Park Recreation Center, 1620 Delowe Drive SW
  • Grove Park Recreation Center, 750 Frances Place NW
  • Rosel Fann Recreation Center, 365 Cleveland Ave SE
  • Thomasville Recreation Center, 1750 Thomasville Dr SE
  • William Walker Recreation Center, 2405 Fairburn Rd SW

Women's games are Tuesday through Thursday at 7pm and 8pm, with the regular season closing 5 November. Men's games are Tuesday through Friday at 9pm, 10pm, 11pm and in some weeks midnight, closing 13 November. Playoffs open Tuesday 17 November. The full schedule and standings are posted on the city's QuickScores site under Atlanta Parks and Recreation.

Two things follow from that. If you want a quiet gym at C.T. Martin on a Thursday evening, you are not getting one. And if you want in, the league is run out of the Mayor's Office of Constituent Services rather than the rec centers themselves — team enquiries go to Senior Advisor Ramondo Davidson. Note that the city's own Midnight Basketball page still describes Season IX in Fall 2025 and names only C.T. Martin; the league has since expanded to six sites, so trust the schedule over the description.

All 29 centers, and the hours they do publish

These are the building hours the City of Atlanta publishes, not basketball times. The gym is inside these windows; whether it is free depends on what is programmed that day, which is why calling first is not a formality here.

Shorter weeks

  • Brownwood, 607 Brownwood Ave SE — Tue–Fri 10am–5pm, Sat 11am–4pm
  • Old Adamsville, 3404 Delmar Ln NW — Mon–Fri 8am–5pm
  • Zaban, 241 Daniel Avenue — Mon–Fri 9am–5pm

Three of these are worth a note. Brownwood is shut on Mondays. Old Adamsville and Zaban both close at 5pm, which makes them effectively unavailable if you work ordinary hours. And the city's center list has visible errors in its address column — it gives Rev. James Orange a Buckhead zip code and William Walker a four-digit one — so treat the address as a starting point and the hours as the reliable part.

What this costs, and what the alternatives cost

Nothing, is the honest answer. The City of Atlanta publishes no drop-in fee, no day pass and no membership rate for basketball at its recreation centers. When the gym is free, you play.

The trade is certainty. If you want to know in advance that a gym will have basketball in it at a particular hour, metro Atlanta has a handful of places that publish that, and they are cheap:

  • E Center, Sugar Hill — open play Monday to Saturday 7am–9pm and Sunday noon–6pm, $2 per person. The widest published open-play window we have found in the metro.
  • Custer Park Sports & Fitness Center, Marietta — $2 a visit on the city's published open-play rate, plus a women's 5v5 drop-in.
  • Gwinnett County recreation centers — $2.25 adult drop-in, $1.25 youth and senior, across six county gyms.
  • Roswell — $4 resident drop-in.
  • Forsyth County — $5 day pass, valid across Central Park, Fowler Park and Old Atlanta Park.
  • City of Decatur — published open-gym basketball sessions at Ebster and Oakhurst.

Two dollars for a certain gym against free for an uncertain one is a real choice, and it depends mostly on how far you are driving.

The practical version

If you are in town and want to play indoors this week: Dunbar on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 10am and 2pm, free, bring ID. If you work during those hours, your best bet at a city center is to ring the one nearest you and ask what the gym has on — the staff know the week's schedule even though the website doesn't. If you want a guaranteed run on a weeknight, cross a county line and pay two dollars.

And if you can field ten people, Midnight Basketball registration for next season is the cheapest route to a city gym with a referee in it.

Every one of these 29 centers has its own page in our directory with its address, hours and map, and we update them when the city's listings change.
