What It Costs to Rent a Gym for Basketball in Atlanta
October 8, 2026 · Pickup
Short answer: expect $50–$175 an hour for a gym in metro Atlanta — but the hourly rate is never the bill. Two- to four-hour minimums and mandatory custodial or security staff usually double it. The cheapest reliable option for a full run is a Cobb County rec center half court at $50 an hour. A school gym realistically lands at $225–$400 a night.
Every figure below comes from a published fee schedule or the facility's own site, checked 29 September 2026 and re-verified against our court records on 8 October 2026. Rates change, and most of these documents say so themselves. Call before you wire anything.
You want a gym. Not a park in July, not a driveway — a floor, two rims, a roof. So you Google "rent a basketball court Atlanta" and you get marketplace listings for somebody's backyard half court, a few national franchise pages, and no numbers.
If what you need first is the mechanics rather than the money — who to ask, which portal, how far ahead — start with how do I rent a gym for basketball in Atlanta? and come back here for the rates.
Here are the numbers. We dug through the actual fee schedules, and the honest headline is this: the advertised hourly rate is usually less than half of what you will pay.
The trap: minimums and staffing
Every serious rental in this metro carries at least one of three multipliers.
- A minimum. Cobb County's school district charges a four-hour-per-day minimum. DeKalb's school portal sets a three-hour minimum. Fulton County Schools and Cobb County rec centers both want two hours. You cannot book an hour of gym time in metro Atlanta from a public body. Nobody does that.
- Mandatory staff. This is the one that gets people. DeKalb bills a custodian at $50 an hour and security at $65 an hour, on top of the room. Cobb Schools bills a custodian at $40 an hour, facility supervision at $44 and security at $110 — and bills them "a minimum of 30 minutes prior to and 30 minutes after the scheduled use," so a three-hour run is four hours of staff time. Fulton states flatly that community users are charged personnel fees and that they "cannot be waived."
- Insurance. Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta wants a certificate of insurance showing general liability of at least $500,000 per person and $1,000,000 per occurrence, plus $100,000 of workers' comp. That is not a phone call. That is a broker.
Work the multipliers and the picture changes completely. A DeKalb high school gym advertised at $75 an hour, at its three-hour minimum, with one custodian, is $375 — not $225.
School gyms: the biggest supply, the most paperwork
Metro Atlanta's school districts own more full indoor courts than everybody else combined. They are also the hardest to price, because only two of the big ones publish a rate card.
Cobb County School District publishes the clearest one in the metro. Its FY2027 fee schedule (dated 14 May 2026) lists:
- Gymnasium practice, per court: $50/hour standard, $15/hour for a 501(c)(3) non-profit or government agency, $4/hour for a school support organisation using another school's gym
- Gymnasium with under 2,000 seats: $75/hour standard
- Four-hour-per-day minimum
- Personnel where required: custodian $40/hour, supervision $44/hour, security $110/hour (all higher on holidays)
- Applications due at least four weeks before your first date
So a rec-league organiser with a 501(c)(3) pays $60 for four hours of court and possibly $200 of custodian — around $260. A group of guys with no non-profit status pays $200 plus the same staff, closer to $400. Gyms in this system include Wheeler High School, Walton High School, Pope High School and South Cobb High School.
DeKalb County School District goes further than anyone and publishes a rate on each individual gym's page through its SchoolSpace portal. Checked in September 2026, those ran from $25/hour at elementary gyms to $75/hour at high schools and specialty campuses — DeKalb School of the Arts lists $75 an hour for a room that seats 1,100. Three-hour minimum, custodian $50/hour, security $65/hour, and card payments add $1.00 plus 3.75%. Other DeKalb gyms on the same portal include Chamblee High School, Tucker High School, Stephenson High School and Dunwoody High School.
Fulton County Schools does not put its rates on the page — the schedule (effective 1 July 2026) is a separate document, and you call 470-254-3600 for it. What the page does tell you is useful anyway: two-hour minimum, unwaivable personnel fees, payment due 10 days out. Roswell High School, Centennial High School and Westlake High School all sit in this system.
Gwinnett County Public Schools and Atlanta Public Schools publish nothing. Gwinnett routes you to the Community School Director for your school's cluster. APS and Gwinnett both list gyms on Facilitron, where you submit a request and the district quotes you — no standing rate. Expect the same shape as the districts that do publish: a minimum, custodial time, and insurance.
One warning. School gym rental portals are district-specific, and a school on a given mailing address is not necessarily in that district. Denmark High School is a Forsyth County school despite an Alpharetta address. Oak Grove Elementary in Acworth is Cherokee County, not Cobb. Check the district before you fill in a form.
Rec centers: the best value in the metro
If you just want ten guys on a floor for two hours, this is where you should be looking, and almost nobody does.
Cobb County PARKS publishes per-centre rate sheets, and they are the cheapest real gym rental we found. At South Cobb Recreation Center in Austell:
- Half court: $50/hour Cobb resident, $75/hour non-resident
- Whole court: $100/hour resident, $150/hour non-resident, $125/hour commercial
- Two-hour minimum, $150 security deposit to hold the date
- Setup and breakdown have to fit inside your booked hours
- Friday and Saturday bookings run to 11:59pm; closed Sundays, no rentals
A half court for two hours is $100 for residents. Ten hoopers, $10 each, no custodian line item, no certificate of insurance. That is the number to beat.
City of Decatur is at the other end. Ebster Recreation Center's published schedule (August 2023) puts the gymnasium at $200 for two hours for residents and $250 for non-residents, with a $500 refundable security deposit, $50/hour setup, $30/hour per staff member after hours, and $100 if you need the floor cover. Decatur's gym is a nice room and it is priced like one.
City of Atlanta publishes no gym rental rate at all. Its Office of Recreation confirms a refundable $100 security deposit per reservation and tells you to call the centre you want, or Central Reservations on 404.546.6757. For a city with this many rec centers, that is a real gap — and it is the same gap we found on open gym times.
Non-profit clubs
Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta publishes a band rather than a rate card: "Prices range from $50/hour for an individual meeting room up to $175/hour for our nicest gym facilities." A gym is the top of that band. Clubs with gyms include Chamblee, Joseph B. Whitehead, Warren and A. Worley Brown in Norcross. They ask you to tour the building first, and the insurance requirement above is non-negotiable.
At $175 an hour for two hours that is $350, or $35 a head for ten. You are paying for a good floor and a staffed building.
Private facilities
Commercial court time is the thinnest market in Atlanta, and the pricing is mostly not published. BRXND Sportsplex at 100 Loyola Dr SW is the clearest: it publishes $10 Sunday open runs and $55 for an hour of group training, but no hourly court rental rate — it runs by appointment, so 470-343-2549 gets you a quote.
Rental marketplaces will show you Atlanta "basketball courts" at attractive hourly rates. Read the listing carefully. A lot of them are residential half courts outdoors.
The honest conclusion: you probably should not rent
Here is the per-head math for ten players.
| Option | Two to four hours | Per head | | --- | --- | --- | | Cobb rec center half court (resident) | $100 / 2 hrs | $10 | | Cobb rec center whole court (resident) | $200 / 2 hrs | $20 | | Decatur gym (resident) | $200 / 2 hrs + $500 deposit held | $20 | | DeKalb elementary gym + custodian | ~$225 / 3 hrs | $22.50 | | BGCMA gym | ~$350 / 2 hrs + insurance | $35 | | DeKalb high school gym + custodian | ~$375 / 3 hrs | $37.50 | | Cobb school gym, standard rate + staff | ~$400 / 4 hrs | $40 |
Now compare that to just showing up somewhere that already runs. Gwinnett County charges $2.25 for an adult to walk into a county gym — Best Friend Park Gym in Norcross and Rhodes Jordan Park Gym in Lawrenceville among them. Acworth Community Center runs free drop-in on two regulation courts. Kennesaw Recreation Center sells a recreation-center membership for $20 a year to Cobb residents, $30 non-resident, $10 for students with ID — but the city publishes no fixed basketball schedule for its three courts, so call 678-385-0165 and ask before you count on a run there. Decatur's Oakhurst and Ebster open gym is $5 residents, $10 everyone else.
Drop-in costs $2 to $10 a head. Renting costs $10 to $40. Rent a gym when you need the floor to yourself — a league, a tournament, a practice, a birthday, a guaranteed night at a guaranteed time with guaranteed people. For a regular run with the same twelve guys, drop-in is cheaper and somebody else deals with the custodian.
If you are going to rent, do this
- Start with your county's rec centers, not the school district. Cheaper, shorter minimums, no insurance certificate, and a human answers the phone.
- Ask for the all-in number, not the hourly rate. The question is "what will four hours on Tuesday actually cost me, including staff." Get it in writing.
- Ask whether you qualify for the non-profit rate. In Cobb the gap is $50 an hour versus $15. If your run is attached to a church, a league or a 501(c)(3), that is a 70% discount sitting there.
- Start four weeks out. Cobb requires it. Everyone else prefers it, and the good slots go early.
- Be resident where you can. Decatur charges non-residents 25% more. Cobb charges 50% more. Bring proof.
