Where can I play basketball for free in Atlanta?

Four metro gyms publish genuinely free adult drop-in basketball: Dunbar Recreation Center in Atlanta, Tuesday to Thursday 10am-2pm for ages 18 and over at $0; Brookhaven's Briarwood and Lynwood community centers; and Acworth Community Center. Everything else indoors runs $2 to $10 a visit. Outdoors, public park courts are free and need no booking at all.

The one free adult session the City of Atlanta actually runs

For most of this year we told people the City of Atlanta publishes nothing about when you can play in its 31 recreation centers. That was wrong, and it was wrong because we were reading the wrong publication.

Dunbar Recreation Center, 477 Windsor Street SW, runs a session the city calls "Hoops at Dunbar" and describes in its own words as "Free Play Basketball for Adults." Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10:00am to 2:00pm. Ages 18 and over. Cost: $0. The city's activity listing shows it running through the end of October 2026 and again from 3 November 2026 to 28 January 2027.

One honest caveat: the listing's header and its description give slightly different start and end dates, so call the center before you make the drive. Details and the map are on the Dunbar Recreation Center page.

This session is not on the department's recreation-center web pages at all. It lives in the activity and registration catalogue, which is a separate publication. If you have ever concluded a city "doesn't publish anything," check the registration system before you believe it.

Brookhaven runs free drop-in at two centers

Briarwood Park & Community Center, 2235 Briarwood Way NE, and Lynwood Park & Community Center, 3360 Osborne Rd NE.

The City of Brookhaven lists three separate free basketball blocks at these buildings — Youth Basketball Drop-In, Adult Basketball Drop-In and Adult Basketball Open Runs. The catch is that Brookhaven publishes them on each center's monthly calendar rather than as fixed weekly hours, so the times move. Pull the current month's calendar before you go.

Acworth, if you are north of the city

Acworth Community Center, 4361 Cherokee Street. Free drop-in basketball on two high-school-regulation courts. You create an account and check in at the front desk; there is no admission charge. The city says open-play times shift each quarter with programming, so check the schedule or call (770) 917-1234. Building hours are Monday to Friday 7:00am-8:00pm and Saturday 8:00am-2:00pm.

Outdoors, free is the default

Indoor free basketball in this metro is genuinely scarce. Outdoor basketball is the opposite: the public park courts in our directory are free, open, and need no call, no account and no admission. That includes every court on the City of Atlanta's own outdoor basketball list, which covers 52 parks.

The trade is weather, lights and whether anyone else is there. A park court at 2pm on a Tuesday in January is a free court with nobody on it. That is the actual reason people pay $2.

What free costs you instead

Every free option above costs you flexibility. Dunbar is free but only mid-day on three weekdays. Brookhaven is free but you have to read a calendar that changes monthly. Acworth is free but the schedule moves each quarter.

The paid alternatives are cheap enough to be worth knowing: $2 at Custer Park in Marietta and at the E Center in Sugar Hill, $2.25 for adults across Gwinnett County's six gyms, $4 in Roswell, $5 in Decatur. The full ladder is in how much open gym basketball costs in Atlanta.

The rest of the picture

Times and prices as published by the City of Atlanta Department of Parks & Recreation, the City of Brookhaven and the City of Acworth, read October 2026. All three warn that open-play times move with programming — the published time is a plan, not a promise.
